For many years I listened to the radio message that said; “not everyone can be a foster parent, but anyone can help a foster child”. It always brought tears to my eyes as I thought…someday I want to donate my time to help foster kids.
Finally, one chilly fall day, I heard that radio spot again and said to myself, “no more somedays…I’m doing this now! I drove straight to Sleep train’s main office, walked in the door and said; “I want to do something to help foster kids and I have no idea what to do”. They immediately referred me to the wonderful folks at Koinonia Homes for Teens.
Hanging on the wall was this adorable note:
The tears ran down my face as I read this little girls thank you letter…I realized then and there that I had found my passion. I have been hooked ever sense! Six weeks later we held our first Angels in the Alley Christmas event for the foster kids.
Whenever I get the chance to work with the foster kids, I magically have endless energy and wings on my feet… it is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done!
Since 2011 we have helped over 500 foster teens and raised over $850,000 to give these kids a Christmas experience they will never forget and provide year-round transitional scholarships for the kids who age out of the foster system and need help getting started on their own.
With the help of all our wonderful supporters, our program keeps growing, so of course, I have tons more ideas to help the foster kids!
My biggest goal is to build them a new school (their current school is an old converted church which is way too small!) Watch for updates as we roll out our big plans!
